چکیده

VOL. 71-B, No. 2, MARCH 1989 repair of the annular ligament difficult and hinder rotation of the forearm. Postoperatively, the elbow is rested in a long-arm plaster slab until the drain is removed. A long-arm hinged brace is then applied ; this allows free pronation and supination as well as elbow flexion from 30 to 90#{176}. At the end of the fourth week, full elbow movement is allowed and the brace is taken off at the end of the sixth week. Illustrative cases. A 1 3 year-old boy sustained the injury shown in Figure 2. Closed reduction failed, so open reduction and internal fixation was performed by the method described (Fig. 3). At three months he had full range of movement in the elbow and forearm, and radiographs at six months showed a well preserved epiphysis in the radial head. Case 2. A 23-year-old member of the Hong Kong national fencing squad sustained a type II fracture of the radial neck and a transverse fracture of the radial head. The radial neck fracture was fixed as described, but 2.7 mm screws were needed. The radial head fracture was fixed with screws at the same time. After routine postoperative treatment he regained full movement and at the end of three months was able to compete in the Olympic selection match.

Case Report Management of Severe Knee Flexion Contractures in a Child with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is a syndrome characterized by the presence of congenital contractures involving multiple joints usually with flexion deformities, with or without pterygia or webbing at the joints. The aim of this case report was to highlight the challenges of management of severe knee contractures in AMC and possible solutions in a resource-limited setting like ours. We pres...

Low-load prolonged stretch vs. high-load brief stretch in treating knee contractures.

This study was designed to compare the results of a traditional method of stretching knee flexion contractures by high-load brief stretch (HLBS) with the results of an experimental method of prolonged knee extension by skin traction, low-load prolonged stretch (LLPS). End range of passive knee extension was measured by standard goniometry. Subjects were 11 nonambulatory residents of a nursing h...

A case report of successful treatment of 90° knee flexion contracture in a patient with adult-onset Still’s disease

BACKGROUND Severe knee flexion contractures greater than 80° are rare and challenging to manage. Previous studies have demonstrated unsatisfactory clinical results after correcting these deformities because residual flexion contractures were not corrected within a short period of time. We herein report the case of a patient with adult-onset Still's disease with 90° of bilateral knee flexion con...

Quantitative analysis of the reversibility of knee flexion contractures with time: an experimental study using the rat model

BACKGROUND Knee flexion contractures prevent the full extension of the knee joint and cause disability. The etiology is not well defined. Extended periods of immobilization of joints lead to contractures difficult to completely reverse by rehabilitation treatments. Recovery of the complete range of motion without intervention has not been studied but is of importance to optimize clinical manage...

Surgical release of knee flexion contractures in myelomeningocele.

We report the results of a prospective study of the surgical release of 45 knee flexion contractures in 28 patients with myelomeningocele. The neurosegmental level was thoracic in ten patients, L1/2 in one, L3/4 in 11, and L5/S1 in six. In walkers the indication for surgery was a fixed flexion contracture impeding walking, and in non-walking patients it was a flexion contracture impeding transf...
